Seven days, six nights: Srinagar, day trips to Sonmarg, Doodhpathri and Gulmarg, a night in Pahalgam and a final night on a Dal Lake houseboat.
We meet you at Srinagar airport or the railway station and take you to your hotel. In the afternoon you see three Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and the smaller Chashme Shahi, known for its spring. Around sunset you have an hour on Dal Lake in a shikara. Overnight in Srinagar.
The drive to Sonmarg, the 'meadow of gold', takes about two and a half to three hours, following the Sindh river for much of the way. Once there, you can ride a pony or walk up towards Thajiwas glacier, and stop at the viewpoints along the riverbed; agree the pony rate before you set off. Bring a warm layer, as it is noticeably cooler than Srinagar. Back to Srinagar in the evening for the night.
Doodhpathri, the 'valley of milk', is about two hours from Srinagar through Budgam district. It is open meadow ringed by pine forest, with the Shaliganga river running through it, and much quieter than the better-known resorts. Take a pony ride or a walk, or just sit by the water for a while. You drive back to Srinagar in the evening.
Gulmarg is about two hours from Srinagar, the last part of the road winding up through pine forest. Most of the day goes on the Gondola: Phase 1 to Kongdoori, then Phase 2 towards Apharwat, and getting to the base station early means less queueing. There is also time for St. Mary's Church, the golf course and Strawberry Valley. Overnight back in Srinagar.
Pahalgam is roughly three hours away, but you will take longer with the stops: the saffron fields at Pampore (in flower only from late October into November), the Awantipora temple ruins, an apple orchard and a cricket bat workshop near Bijbehara. After checking in to your Pahalgam hotel, walk along the banks of the Lidder in the evening. Overnight in Pahalgam.
The morning is for Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. Outside vehicles are not allowed up to these spots, so you go in Pahalgam's local union cabs, paid directly. In the afternoon you drive back to Srinagar and check in to a traditional luxury houseboat on Dal Lake for the night.
Breakfast on the houseboat, and if there is time before your flight, a shopping stop at Lal Chowk or a local market. We drop you at Srinagar airport. Security starts at the outer gate there, so leave yourself plenty of time.
Hotels are named before you pay. If one is unavailable on your dates we will tell you what we are substituting and requote. We never swap it silently.
