“Seven days on the Great Lakes trek with this team. Well-run camps, genuinely good food at 3,800 m, and a trek leader who turned us back from the Gadsar pass one morning for weather and got the call right. Safety-first without being joyless.”
An eight-day trek from Sonmarg to Naranag past Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and the Gangabal twin lakes, with full camping support.
We run it with a certified trek leader, guides, a cook team and full camping support. Tents, food and the kitchen are carried for you; if you would rather not carry your own backpack, offloading can be arranged at extra cost. The highest point is the Gadsar pass at 4,200 m.
Moderate still means six days of walking at altitude, with some long days and a steep final descent. Put in a few weeks of regular walking or running beforehand, and break in your boots before you arrive.

Srinagar to Sonmarg
The drive from Srinagar to Sonmarg takes around two and a half to three hours. Sonmarg is at 2,730 m, so the rest of the day is kept light: a gear check with the trek leader and a short acclimatisation walk. Overnight in Sonmarg.
-
Sonmarg to Nichnai
The first trekking day is 11 km, climbing through the Shekdur maple forest to the Nichnai campsite at 3,500 m. It is a steady uphill, and a good day to settle into your own pace rather than keep up with anyone else's.
-
Nichnai to Vishansar
You cross the Nichnai pass at 4,100 m, then drop down to the wide meadow beside Vishansar lake, where you camp for the night. Mornings are cold at this height, so keep a warm layer on for the first hour of walking.
-
Vishansar to Gadsar
Usually the toughest day. You climb past Krishansar lake and over the Gadsar pass at 4,200 m, the highest point of the trek, before coming down towards Gadsar to camp.
-
Gadsar to Satsar
An easier day across rolling meadows to Satsar, a group of seven small lakes. There is an army check post on the way where IDs are checked, so keep your original ID somewhere you can reach it, not at the bottom of your bag.
-
Satsar to Gangabal twin lakes
A section of boulder-hopping comes first, then the Zaj pass and the descent to Gangabal and Nundkol, the twin lakes at the foot of Mount Harmukh. You camp by the lakes for the last night of the trek.
-
Gangabal to Naranag, drive to Srinagar
The last day is a long, steep descent through pine forest to Naranag, hard on the knees, so trekking poles help. From Naranag you are driven back to Srinagar. Your Srinagar hotel tonight is not part of the package.
